Common Braces Henderson Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

Orthodontists specialize in orthodontics treatment, which requires additional training of about 2-3 years after completion of dental school. For braces treatment, the best treatment will come from orthodontists who are more experienced and knowledgeable about the subject.

Are there different types of braces?

Yes. Based on the assessment of your teeth, jaws, and facial structure, your orthodontist may recommend one of the following treatments:

  • Traditional Metal Braces: They use metal brackets and arch wires anchored to elastic ligatures that are changed during each adjustment.
  • Ceramic braces: Unlike conventional braces, they use clear brackets that blend with the patient’s tooth color.
  • Self-ligating braces: Similar to traditional braces but they use brackets with a sliding mechanism for easy adjustments. They don’t need elastic ligatures, feel more natural, and take less time than traditional braces to deliver results.
  • Invisalign : Mostly used by adults, as it uses a series of transparent aligners (instead of wires and brackets) that overlay the teeth and straightens them gradually.

Can I continue to eat as usual?

Once treatment begins, your orthodontist will give you a clear set of instructions on foods that you must avoid, including hard candy and sticky foods. You also need to limit between-meal snacks so it is easier to maintain oral hygiene.

Do braces hurt?

Yes, braces Henderson will cause some discomfort at times. This is to be expected. The reason being because braces work to re-align your jaw by gradually applying pressure to move your teeth. You will be expected to have routine checkups in order to have your wires or braces adjusted so that the same amount of pressure is applied to move your teeth.

Are braces difficult to manage?

This depends on the type of orthodontics you select. Traditional metal braces can be challenging for some because they require additional maintenance. However, Invisalign braces can be removed from your mouth at any time, making it convenient to maintain your routine oral habits such as brushing and flossing.

How do I know if I need braces?

The only real way to know if you are a good candidate for braces is to have an orthodontic screening, which will also answer any questions you may have including cost and pricing information. However, good candidates typically suffer from:

  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Malocclusion
  • Overcrowding

For children, it is recommended that an orthodontic evaluation occur by the age of 7. This is because most permanent teeth and molars have erupted by then. Early orthodontic treatment may prevent larger issues from arising.
